Last night, Justina's PC crashed resulting in (for some unknown reason) the total loss of all her macros. It dawned on me then that there's actually a way to safeguard against something like that, and so I thought I'd share it here.
If you browse your hard drive to C:\Program Files\PlayOnline\SquareEnix\FINAL FANTASY XI\USER (or wherever you installed FFXI) you'll see a bunch of oddly named subdirectories... one for each of your characters. Inside each folder are files containing your macros, auction house sort informaion, map markings, etc... pretty much everything the game store locally, I'm guessing. So if you want to be safe, just zip the USER directory up and stash it somewhere.
Another convinient use of this: let's say you install FFXI on a buddy's PC so you can play over at his place, or something. You would normally have to re-do all of your custom settings, macros, etc. But if you copy your USER directory into the new installation, all of your stuff will be preserved. (just don't erase your friend's USER files!) This would also come in handy if you ever had to reinstall FFXI for some reason.
Anyways, I know this is a little too late to help Justina out, which sucks... but hopefully folks will still find it useful.

Thank you for the suggestion 'Rinn. It was decidedly frustrating considering I had so many different sets worked out; but, if nothing else, this allows me to revitalize them and organize things a bit better. I will most certainly take your suggestion though and back up the folder so that nothing like this will happen in the future. |
